Real prep for (real) upcoming auditions.

Ever wonder what casting is writing down while you sing? It’s time to find out.

Each Sunday, simulate your upcoming week’s auditions with us. We’ll post several REAL auditions coming up this week — Non-Union open calls, EPAs, and/or ECCs — and you come ready to sing from your book for the auditions that excite you. PLUS, each week we’ll add a fourth “fantasy” audition to spice things up and keep you (and your rep book) on your toes.

But! If this week’s callboard doesn’t particularly excite you, or if you have a callback or different audition to prepare for, you can “Choose Your Own Adventure”: tell us what your plan is and your Guest Auditor (the smart person behind the table) will respond accordingly.

Additionally, this class is great for any actor who:

  • Has been out of (or new to) the audition game and looking to develop a solid routine

  • Is looking to join a community of supportive actors going to the same calls they’re going to

  • Is keen to know how their material is working, and how their package (from headshot to resume to attire) is being received

  • One-hour (Sundays, 5-6pm or 6-7pm)

Taught by a Guest Auditor — someone with experience behind the table who can help you sharpen your skills

7-10 students per hour. While not singing, other students sit “behind the table.”

Class begins with a 10-minute brief on this week’s callboard and open discussion on the breakdowns, auditions, the union, and more.

Then, each student offers one cut for each of their two auditions — and they may be asked for “something else.”

Once everyone has gone up twice, we use the remaining time to discuss feedback and other audition-related issues that came up.

  • You bring a headshot, resume, and your book.

When it’s your time, you sing a cut that is appropriate for one of this week’s auditions. Your auditor may ask you to sing more from your book (especially if they need to hear more, based on your chosen audition breakdowns).

Your Guest Auditor will take copious notes which you’ll receive once you’re done.

You do this a second time for your other audition.

  • Examples of the feedback you might expect to see:

    FEEDBACK EXAMPLE #1:

Great headshot! Awesome outfit for this Hadestown call. Nice song choice, but may have preferred something with more energy. Ground yourself from the start, your physical performance wandered a ton. Great shape of your cut on both. Second song, start the cut four bars later, and watch your pitch on the climax. When we asked for a comedy song (which is great for the show), you didn’t have one—something to think about!

    FEEDBACK EXAMPLE #2:

Perfect first song, perfect cut, terrific and energizing performance. No notes. Second song felt like not the best fit for the show … consider leaning more “pop” in your selection. When we asked you for more material, you seemed ready for anything. Your resume looks a tiny bit disorganized. Your outfit didn’t match the person in the headshot you’ve given.
