What is RSO’s Writers Class?
Lin-Manuel Miranda. Shaina Taub. Alex Brightman. Hunter Foster. Kate Wetherhead.
What do they have in common?
They’re actors and writers.
Writing a song, play, musical, screenplay, or pilot is a powerful way to grow your artistic career. You might create something for yourself to star in—or simply explore writing as a path all its own.
It’s easy to imagine artists sitting down and effortlessly creating brilliance. But actors know the truth: greatness comes from time, prep, and process. Writing is no different. Like rehearsal, it takes planning, development, and discipline over days and weeks.
If you’re ready to start writing for stage or screen, you don’t need to go back to school—start here.
-
No experience required—just a strong interest in writing.
Over six one-hour classes, you’ll be taught by AT co-founder and award-winning writer Ryan Scott Oliver (RSO!). Alternating lecture and presentation weeks, you’ll learn to write (and rewrite) a scene, a song, and then combine both into a short musical piece.
• Write independently or collaborate with classmates
• Work on your own ideas or respond to prompts
• Submit work before class for written notes from RSO, plus in-class feedback
• Finish with a scene, a song, and a scene-with-song (a mini-musical!)
Students ready to continue may move into RSO’s Advanced Writing Workshop, where work becomes part of Actor Therapy’s New Works initiative, with opportunities for funded readings and development sessions.

$425 for the six-week class.
