CLASSIC UPTEMPO GO-TO
This a song from a classic show likely written before 1969, sometimes referred to as golden age or standards, but the definition has changed as time goes on. This is legit soprano, legit alto, legit tenor/bass. Think Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, Cabaret, Bells are Ringing, She Loves Me. Pastiche songs written more recently that are meant to sound like this genre can work, like A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder or Thoroughly Modern Millie. You need at least 1 in this genre, but if you specialize in it or sing in more than one voice type (soprano and alto, for example), you might have 2-3 contrasting.
RADIO GO-TO UPTEMPO
This a song written in a popular “radio” style (pop, rock, R&B, alternative, hip-hop, Top 40, etc.—not folk/country or 50s-60s which are their own genres) likely after 1990, but the 70s and 80s work here, too (though you should have at least one written in the last 20 years). Think Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Billy Joel, Queen, Sara Bareilles, Bruno Mars. You need at least 1 in this genre, but if you specialize in it, you might have up to 4 contrasting.
CONTEMPORARY M.T. GO-TO UPTEMPO
This a contemporary musical theatre song written probably after 1990, from a recent Broadway show or a standalone by a new writer meant to evoke the popular styles of today. Think In the Heights, Next to Normal, A Strange Loop, Honeymoon in Vegas, Fun Home, The Prom, etc., and songs by new writers like RSO, Joe Iconis, Lowdermilk & Kerrigan, Adam Gwon, Drew Gasparini, etc. You need at least 1 in this genre, but if you specialize in it, you might have 2-3 contrasting.
FOLK/COUNTRY SONG
This a folk or country (or their hybrids, like folk-pop or country-rock, etc.) song, that is probably from the radio but could be from a specifically folk/country musical. Think Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Shania Twain, The Chicks, Rascal Flatts, some Elvis, early Taylor Swift, Bright Star, Hands on a Hardbody. You should have at least 1 (probably uptempo) in this genre, but if you specialize in it, you might have 2-3 contrasting, including a ballad.
"CONTEMPORARY LEGIT" SONG (Read carefully!)
Think Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, The Secret Garden, Ragtime, Titanic, some classic Disney musicals, and almost all Frank Wildhorn. Sometimes referred to as “megamusical” or “spectular musical,” this is a song from a show that bridges the gap between legit and contemporary singing, while not being pop. Basically, if it was written after 1980 and it’s a period piece, it’s probably contemporary legit. You should have at least 1 in this genre, and it’s okay if it’s a ballad (it probably will be).
50s/60s SONG
This is a 50s/60s era song (probably from the radio, but could be from a specifically 50s/60s-sounding or pastiche musical) and specifically shows off the musical/vocal stylings that were popular in those decades (ie. Doo-wop, Motown, Rock & Roll, rhythm and blues, etc.) Think Elvis, Leslie Gore, The Everly Brothers, Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, The Supremes, The Platters, The Shirelles, The Four-Tops, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Chuck Berry, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Roy Orbison, James Brown, Aretha Franklin. You'll probably want at least 1 in this genre, probably an up-tempo.
"SONDHEIM" (ETC.) SONG
A song meant to demonstrate your handling of complex music and/or dense lyrics. It’s probably written by Stephen Sondheim, but some later writers who specialized in challenging music with a more artsy, academic, or complex edge could qualify, like Michael-John LaChiusa, Adam Guettel, Ricky Ian Gordon, some JRB, some Jeanine Tesori, etc. You should have at least 1 (uptempo or ballad) in this genre, but if you specialize in it, you might have 2 contrasting. Don't worry if it's difficult to play!
