Does this program mostly cater toward college-aged students?
Our students come from everywhere and have a variety of experience. Some are Equity, some are not; some have Broadway credits, some have just graduated college; we’ve had 18-year-old students and we have had 50-year-old students. While our “usual student” is between 20-30, has some significant performance experience and training and near the start of their careers, everyone is welcome. No matter who you are, we’ll find out what YOU need, and we’ll create your trajectory accordingly.
I had a not-so-good experience in college. Will this be a repeat of that?
We hope not! One of the best things about AT is that you hold the power to shape your experience. We focus on running our own race, not competing with others - and our feedback is always based on YOUR unique goals and intentions. Plenty of AT students come to us to “unlearn” toxic mindsets they picked up in past training environments, and we’re proud to have helped countless actors do just that.
I have always struggled with receiving copious amounts of feedback over the years, much of which feels contradictory. Will this just add to the mess?
While we’ll have no shortage of feedback to give, we believe that the key to handling feedback is learning to decipher what YOU think. This business is full of contradictions, that’s part of what makes it exciting! The key is learning to filter feedback in a way that serves you. When you receive a note, ask yourself, “do I agree with this?” If the answer is “yes”, great! If the answer is “no”, you can let it go, guilt-free.
I am an actor of color, size, or disability. Will I be relegated to only work on material that focuses on my difference?
Not at all! While we encourage you to celebrate your authenticity, it’s just one part of who you are as an artist. We’re here to explore the full range of your artistry - so that means working on material that truly resonates with you, beyond any labels or expectations.
I feel lost, and need someone to give me direction: tell me my type, what to sing, and what roles I should go out for. Will Actor Therapy help me with that?
We’re here to tell you what WE see, decipher if that aligns with what YOU feel, and build from there. While we’re here to offer direction and advice, this journey is led by YOU - meaning you’ll primarily find your own material, build your own list of dream roles, and set your own goals. This is the best way to strengthen your sense of self and sharpen those instincts!
I’m worried I’m too old/young for your program. What is the typical age range?
